CONSTRUCTION RELEVANT DETAILS

The pendulum body is cast-iron, of high strength and precision machined.PIB_30_MW_HEADER_DETAIL

The dimensions of the pendulum are such that its percussion centre is situated within 1% of the distance from its rotation axis to the impact centre.

When the pendulum is at rest, the edge of the blade is no farther than 2.5 mm from where it would touch the test piece.

When the pendulum is at rest, the variation in reading between the indicator in position of zero energy and the edge of the blade held against the test piece is 0.2%.

The oscillation plane of the pendulum is perpendicular to the transverse axis of the anvil of the CHARPY test piece or the IZOD bench screw, within 3:1000.

The transverse movement of the pendulum at the blade is no more than 0.75 mm under a transverse force of 4% of the effective pendulum weight applied at the centre of impact.

The radial movement of the pendulum support points is no more than 0,075 mm.

OPERATION

Lifting the pendulum hammer is achieved by an electric motor with gear reduction, which allows the pendulum arm and hammer to be lifted automatically as far as their stand-by position, where they are held by means of a locking system with a proximity detector.
Once the hammer is raised and located in its stand-by position for the test, its release can only be achieved by pressing two push buttons located on the front part of the pendulum, needing to use both hands, increasing the passive safety of the equipment.

The braking system of the hammer, after breakage of the test piece, is electromagnetic and can be performed in two different ways:

  • In automatic mode: the device brakes automatically the hammer once the specimen is broken.
  • In manual mode: by means of pressing a pushbutton. The braking action lasts as long as pressure is maintained on the pushbutton.

The user can also select the braking mode (manual or automatic) in the menu of the electronic module for reading and digital control.

ELECTRONIC MODULE FOR READING AND DIGITAL CONTROL

The measuring system is based on the use of an encoder (digital impulse transducer) directly mounted on the hammer rotation axis so as its axis can turn with it at the same time. 2500 pulses / revolution encoder is used which means its measuring resolution is 0.1 Joules which widely complies with the ASTM E23 standard requirements.

The electronic module for reading and digital control processes the signals proceeding from the encoder and shows in a LCD display, with two files of 16 characters, the test parameters are as follows:

  • Number sample.
  • Number specimen.
  • Test standard.

Once the test is finished the Angle value (º) will be displayed with a resolution of 0,1º and the Energy ( J ) with a resolution of 0.1 J.

This electronic unit has the pushbuttons necessary for the parameters of the test.

RS 232 connector: for a connection to a PC to control the unit for the parameters of the test as well as for data acquisition (in real time) is included in the unit.

PROGRAMMING THE ELECTRONIC MODULE

By means of the push buttons we can have access to the different menus which options are described as follows:

Configure test: this menu enables to configure the standard, sample and specimen data.
  • Test standard: (only for compatible pendulums, in the rest of pendulums the standard change does not affect the results.) It enables to select between the following different standards: EN1, ASTM4, ASTM3, ASTM2, ASTM1, EN4, EN3 y EN2.
  • Sample number: this menu enables to configure the sample number to test. Values from 1 to 99.
  • Specimen number: this menu enables to configure the specimen number in each sample. It increases automatically with each specimen test. This option will only have to be configured and reset to 1 each time a new sample is created. Values from 1 to 99.
Start Test: Starts the test and displays the current sample, the specimen number, the standard, the angle and the energy.
General options: This menu enables to configure options as the printing mode, the language, etc.
  • Select language: It enables to select the language in which the menus will be displayed. The available languages are: Spanish, English, French and PortuguesePIB-30-MB_module
  • Printing mode: (Only for modules with an incorporated printer). If the unit has no printer, select No printing, if it has, depending on its location and the output paper you have the possibility to select between the Normal or Inverted printing.
  • Send PC mode: Three possible options:
    • Not send: with this option the information is not sent to the computer.
    • Protocole Xon/Xoff, and Protocole hardware, when whatever option is selected the mode send data to PC is activated, some of the data sent are: sample number, number of specimens of the sample, as well as test resulting values.
Select Protocole Xon/Xoff for the communication of the control unit with the “WinCharpy” programme”.
  • Energy calculation: the maximum energy of the pendulum will correspond to the calculated value using the Read initial angle or to the Theoretical energy value.
This option is used to correct possible losses due to the friction, according to what is permitted by the standards. The default value is the Theoretical one. The Read value will only be used to check if the corrected value is lower than the maximum permitted by the standard. To have the possibility to use the Read value, you must use set to zero the Encoder each time you start a test.
  • Calculation angle: The initial angle used for the calculation can be the read value before to start the test or a Theoretical value.
This option is used to correct the possible frictions of the pendulum as permitted by the standards. The default value is the Theoretical one. With the Read value, it’s the same as explained in the previous point.
  • Save default: It saves the values configured until now in the Test Configuration and General Options menus, and it saves them for not having to proceed to changes, these data will remain registered so that they are available in future start up in the control unit.
Adjustment menu:
  • Angle menu: This option is used to set zero in the Encoder. That is necessary to perform the Read Calculation of the Angle and the Energy.
  • Calculation period: Used to check the pendulum. Adjust an initial angle and release the pendulum arm (see maximum angle permitted according to the standard) and calculate the average time per cycle after performing 100 complete cycles.
Mechanical test: This test is used for the pendulum verification.

  • Angle reading: It enables to check the correct working of the Encoder.
  • Relay raise: This option is only used in motorized pendulums and enables to check the correct working of the relay which raises the anvil.
  • Relay release: This option is only used in motorized pendulums and enables the correct working of the relay which releases the anvil.
  • Relay brake: This option is only used in motorized pendulums and enables to check the correct working of the relay which stops the hammer.
  • Automatic brake: This option is only used in motorised pendulums and enables to check the correct working of the automatic brake.

IMPACT TESTER INSTRUMENTATION

Independently of the analogue system, the pendulum incorporates a computerised measurement and data processing system, which is described below:

  • Hardware The signal obtained form the encoder is processed by means of the electronic module for reading and digital control and a software package specially developed by our R&D department for the processing, calculation and direct indication of results and graphs on the PC.
  • Software Software package WinCharpy, for WINDOWS environment.PIB-30-MB_hardware

This application obtains the data from the electronic module of the pendulum through a serial port in the PC. With the connection all the tests available in the module from the last connection appear, with a limit of 100. In case more tests are performed, you will only read the last 100 tests. The tests sent to the PC are erased from the electronic module or can be saved, depending on the configuration of the application.

A list of performed tests is received in the module, this list includes the following information for each test.
    • Number sample.
    • Number specimen.
    • Test standard
The application allows the user to group the specimens and materials corresponding to a same sample. These samples composed by different specimen can be saved in a file for its later revision and/or to create the corresponding reports.

For a correct operation of the WinCharpy application it is necessary to install the Microsoft Office application.

It is possible to export the data obtained to an Excel or CSV format, as well as indicate if when you export the data, they will automatically be opened in the Microsoft Excel application.
    PIB-30_PENDULUM_SOFTWARE1PIB-30_PENDULUM_SOFTWARE2

  • Impact tester foundation: Given the requirements imposed by the standards for impact tester foundations, two alternative methods are contemplated:
    • Concrete base: By the construction of a concrete cube of the dimensions and mass determined by the standard.
In this case, to correctly level it, the use of a self-levelling mortar is needed (sack of 50 Kg of foundation mortar).
The necessary drawings to construct the concrete cube, as well as the 50 kg of mortar for the foundations, will be sent to you at no cost once we have received your firm order.
    • Metallic base: Of 200 mm thick steel planned with a 3%o flatness uncertainty. In this case we can supply the drawings for it to be manufactured in situ by you as well as the metallic structure for its anchoring to the floor.
We can also, logically, build this base ourselves but in view of the high machining costs that, of course, would be lower if carried out locally, we prefer to offer you the construction drawings for you or local auxiliary workshops to carry out fabrication.
Of course, if you wish us to quote this metallic base, please tell us so that we can send you the corresponding quotation. We recommend, if you wish to be ASTM E-23 certified, that you opt for this second solution.
