The next step after video-extensometry is laser video-extensometry which, apart from avoiding the inconvenient of manually specimen marking by adhesive tapes, metallic clips and so on, works at very high temperatures (furnaces up to 1500º C) with very low Lo (> 1mm) and in both directions (tension – compression). The Lo is determined by bright marks emitted by laser diodes and registered by 2 video-cameras (master and slave).

An advance image processing system converts the relative displacement of these marks in a strain signal, which is exported to the materials testing machine control system.

This type of extensometer allows Lo adjustments from 0 to 250 mm, maximum elongation up to 990 mm and measuring precision as per EN 10.002/4 Class 1.

TRANSVERSE EXTENSOMETERS

According to standards: Class 0.5 (EN-10.002-4)

IB/MFI

Axial telescopic extensometer for testing specimens or elements with a large initial gauge length (Lo up to 1,000 mm) and high travel (up to 100 mm), such as cables, chains, wire strands, ropes, slings, belts etc. Due to its special design, it can work in both vertical and horizontal materials testing machines.
The specimen clamping system, with five circular rotating knife edges arranged in a circular arc, at each clamping point, allows to follow, without any difficulty, the movement of the rotation produced in round, twisted or plaited specimens (ropes, cords, wire strands, etc), when subjected to tensile tests.IBMFI scpecial extensometry

They are commonly used for measurement of Poisson’s ratio, for transverse measurements with anisotropic materials like many composites and for sheet metal testing such as r-value determination.

Most often they are used simultaneously with other axial extensometers. This extensometer can be used both in static and dynamic performances.
